Hey friends,
Here is a letter from John Paik, the director of our upcoming sports camp in Kibera!
Hey everybody,
My name is John, and for those of you who don’t know me, I am one of the 12 people blessed to have visited Kibera last year, and I just wanted to inform anyone who might be interested of an awesome opportunity to get involved and possibly even go yourself this summer. A bunch of us from last year who went are going back this June, and we’d love it if you came with us. There are a couple of areas we are focusing on for the long term in light of serving the slum of Kibera. These include but are not limited to health, education, and an annual sports camp.
Right now we already have a couple of groups going this summer (check out www.kiberapendaproject.com for more info on opportunities and read below for the health trip that Mindy and Sue are leading) , but I wanted to see if there was anyone out there who has a desire specifically for serving these people through sports ministry. The current plan is to host a week long camp that entails a lot of activities and games and a variety of sports. If you’re familiar with summer camps such as Camp Ozark and Pine Cove, the ultimate goal is to be able to provide a similar atmosphere where kids can have a fun and exciting experience that is also Gospel oriented. Most of these kids live a pretty rough and mundane life in the slum, and to be able to love, serve and pour into them through this camp, even for just a week, would mean so much to them. We’re looking for a few girls and a few guys who share the same passion and want to partner in making this happen. Basically, this will involve meeting a few times each month leading up to the trip to pray and plan out logistics for the camp before helping run the camp in Africa.
The trip will be June 11-26, and the total cost will be just over $2,500. If you’re at all interested please be praying about it and shoot me an email at jrpaik@gmail.com. I’d love to hear from you. Thanks
