Elizabeth Simiyu

Elizabeth recently graduated 8th grade and has become part of Kibera Penda Project's New Hope Scholarship Fund. Through this fund, we partner sponsors with students and provide them with full high school scholarships. Without these scholarships, the majority of these students would never have the opportunity to receive an education. Elizabeth is still in need of a sponsor - this is her story:

"My name is Elizabeth Simiyu, I'm fifteen years old. I live in Kibera. I live with my sister because my mom is in up-country and my dad passed away when I was still young. I have only one older sister and three young brothers who live with my mom. I'm close to my family, my sister is a housewife while my brother-in-law in an engineer.

The important thing that happened to me is the day that I moved from up-country to Nairobi and you know I'd never thought one day I would go to school. But the day my sister took me there was my happiest day.

Every morning I wake up and take my bath and I come to school. In the evening I go back home and do the house chores and hang out with my friends. At night I study a little and go to sleep.

I'm a Christian and I believe in God but the difficulties I face by being a Christian is my family are muslims and they don't like me being a Christian. What I always says is that I will never change my mind.

Another thing is when my dad died I was only six years. It was so difficult for me to accept the fact that he was dead and I ended up asking God questions. I thought he was really forsaken me but that wasn't right. Now I know he had a plan for me.

I'm working hard on my education in order to achieve my dreams. After my education I want to be a doctor and I would be glad if I would work in the USA. I like singing and dancing and what makes me happy is when I go to school like other children. I pray to God that he will help me achieve my dreams and promise to be his child forever no matter what happens."
